Representational Competence of Fields Inventory (RCFI)

Purpose

The Representational Competence of Fields Inventory (RCFI) aims to assess and facilitate the comprehension of diagrams, graphs, and mathematical equations within the context of undergraduate physics curricula, specifically focusing on vector fields.

Population

The RCFI is typically given to students in their third semester pursuing studies in science, physics, technology, engineering, and mathematics disciplines.

Typical Performance

We do not know of any published results with typical performance. As the LASSO platform collects more data, we will be able to offer better guidance on student performance.

Validity

The RCFI was originally developed in 2021. The development is detailed in

Küchemann, S., Malone, S., Edelsbrunner, P., Lichtenberger, A., Stern, E., Schumacher, R., … & Kuhn, J. (2021). Inventory for the assessment of representational competence of vector fields. Physical Review Physics Education Research, 17(2), 020126.
