A Physics Tutor That Adapts to What You Understand
Learn physics by thinking through ideas, not just getting answers.
This AI-powered physics tutor uses what you already know to guide you through physics concepts step by step. It’s designed to help you build understanding, not just finish assignments.

Not Just Another AI Chatbot
Most AI tools can explain physics.
This one is built to help you learn physics.
Our tutor is designed to work with learning data from LASSO’s Cognitive Diagnostic assessments, but you do not need to take an assessment to use it.
Instead of giving generic explanations, the tutor focuses on the physics ideas that matter most for you right now.
Rather than handing you answers, it asks questions, offers hints, and helps you reason through concepts so you can make sense of them yourself.
How This Tutor Helps You Learn Physics
This tutor is designed to support real learning by:
• Adapting to your current understanding of physics concepts
• Guiding you through problems using questions and prompts
• Helping you connect ideas across topics
• Supporting learning outside of class, at your own pace
The goal is to help you develop understanding that lasts beyond a single homework problem or exam.
What This Tutor Does Not Do
This tutor is not designed to:
• Solve homework problems for you
• Give final answers to turn in
• Replace your teacher or instructor
Instead, it helps you think through physics concepts so you can solve problems independently.
This is intentional. Research on how students learn physics shows that a lasting understanding emerges from active reasoning, rather than being given answers.
How the Tutor Uses Your Proficiency Information
To personalize the tutoring experience, the tutor asks for a small amount of information when you start.
Overall proficiency
You’ll be asked to enter an overall proficiency score.
• A score of 0 represents the average level of understanding across all LASSO users.
• Positive numbers mean you feel more confident than average.
• Negative numbers mean you feel less confident than average.
If you’ve taken a LASSO Cognitive Diagnostic assessment, you can use that score.
If not, you can simply make your best estimate.
Skill-level proficiency
You’ll also enter skill proficiency levels for specific physics ideas.
• These can come from an assessment, or
• You can estimate them yourself based on what feels solid or confusing.
The tutor uses this information to focus on skills where you are not yet proficient, rather than spending time on ideas you already understand.
There are no “right” or “wrong” numbers here. The goal is simply to help the tutor adapt to you.
What to Expect During a Session
Once you begin:
• The tutor will ask questions rather than give answers
• You may be prompted to explain your thinking or make predictions
• The focus will stay on concepts you’re still developing
You don’t need to prepare anything in advance. Just engage honestly with the questions and see where the conversation takes you.
Designed With How Students Actually Learn in Mind
This tutor is built by physics education researchers who study how students learn physics and why many educational technologies fail to improve understanding.
The questions, prompts, and activities you’ll see are grounded in decades of research on effective physics learning. Rather than promising shortcuts, the tutor is designed to support the kinds of thinking that help students succeed in physics courses.
The goal is simple: help more students learn physics in ways that actually work.
About This Beta
This tutor is still under development.
We’re actively improving it based on how students use it and the feedback they share. That means your experience, including what works well and what doesn’t, directly helps shape the future of the tool.
The beta version is currently available for free. In the future, access to the tutor may require payment to support ongoing development, maintenance, and the broader LASSO learning platform.
If pricing changes, we’ll be transparent about it in advance.
